Topolobampo: Then and Now

on
January 18, 2017

First of all, let’s acknowledge the wonderful name of this town. Try it out – say it a few times. You can never say this name and be sad at the same time. Well, almost never.

Topolobampo was not an intended stop on our route; it is too far north…

Gin Rummy, round 3

on
January 14, 2017

This leg was from Lake Tahoe to Cabo, and Becca prevailed again!

Since the water has warmed considerably and jumping in is now a luxury, not a punishment, it was time for a new bet.

Loser must: Eat a lime. This was particularly fun for John, who does not like tart…

January’s issue of 48 North

on
January 2, 2017

Another month; another great issue of 48 North! Check out page 52 for my article about the perspective I got when I stepped away from cruising for a few weeks. If that sounds boring, check it out anywhere because there is a photo of my new baby nephew in it, and…

Eluding Santa

on
January 1, 2017

“But how will Santa find you?!”

It was my dad’s biggest worry when I told him we’d be leaving San Jose del Cabo on Christmas eve, not projected to arrive at Isla Espiritu Santo until sometime Christmas morning.

They are the lines that run parallel and horizontally around the earth starting at the equator (0 degrees) and moving towards the poles (90 degrees). Each degree of latitude is broken…

Notes from a night watch

on
November 24, 2016

It’s 4:07am. This is an hour that humans are built to spend lying horizontally, all muscles relaxed, mind whisked away to fairy tale land. It is an hour with an identity crisis, not yet morning, but hardly still nighttime. A forgotten hour, rarely thought of kindly. I had let…

A Day in the Life

on
November 20, 2016

That title usually evokes normalcy: explain to me a single day because the rest of them are probably similar. Well, that’s just not the case around here; very little stays the same day to day. So instead of normalcy, I want that title to induce a comparison; this is…

Mexico!

on
November 13, 2016

Boy, it feels good to be here. We had a great time and learned a great deal coming down the coast of the US, but this – this is what we are all about. (We subconsciously reinforced this by taking almost no photos in southern california.)

Our send off from…
